20 killed in Texas, US shooting

Twenty people were killed and another 26 injured in a shooting attack at a shopping complex in the US city of El Paso, Texas on Saturday.

The attack at a Walmart shopping centre, which police said may have been racially motivated, was the eighth deadliest mass shooting in US history.

It rocked the majority-Hispanic El Paso community of over 800,000 people along the US-Mexico border, which prides itself as being one of the safest cities in America.

The suspected shooter, a 21-year-old man from Allen, Texas, attacked the Walmart, which was "at capacity" with between 1,000 and 3,000 people inside, using a rifle on Saturday morning, police spokesman Robert Gomez said.

El Paso Police Department Chief Greg Allen said authorities were examining a manifesto, possibly written by the suspect, that indicated the shooting had "a nexus to a potential hate crime."

The suspected attacker was in custody after surrendering when approached by police, Allen said.

Texas Governor Gregg Abbott called the attack "one of the most deadly days in the history of Texas."
