If you didn’t know, Michael Ferguson is a local musician who grew up in Johannesburg and gained a passion for music after his father taught him how to strum a G Chord. Following this momentous occasion, Michael stole every opportunity he could in order to sneak a strum at the guitar strings.
This dedication could have been the inspiration behind Ferguson pursuing a career in music. His Debut album, “Rock ‘n Roll Souljah” was a self-funded project that contained many songs that Michael wrote in the early stages of his career. Following “Rock ‘n Roll Souljah”, he released “Paper Planes” that debuted in early 2016. Ferguson is a regular performer in Algoa Country. Many would recognize him from performances at local festivals, with the most recent performance on the floating stage, just outside the Algoa FM offices at the Boardwalk over, the Easter Weekend.
You can also hear him on on-air with songs such as ‘I Refuse’ and K.I.S.S.I.N.G, but what does Ferguson have in common with “Man on the Moon”?
The song was popular in the early eighties and spent a massive nineteen weeks in the charts. “Man on the Moon” was released in 1981 by the South African band, Ballyhoo. The group was made up of 5 artist, Derrick Dryan (vocals), Attie van Wyk (keyboard), Mick Matthews (guitar and vocals) Fergie Ferguson (bass and vocals), Cedric Samson (drums).
One of the names in the band must have caught your attention.
Ferguson and ‘Man on the Moon’ have Fergie Ferguson in common. Michael is the son of Fergie and Fergie is the bass and vocals of the eighties hit and current classic, “Man on the Moon”.
