Shania Twain opens up about childhood sexual abuse

Just over a week ago she was seen at the Coachella music festival, having fun with fellow celebrities, posing for photographs and smiling for the camera, proof that something as horrific as childhood sexual abuse can be survived.

Shania Twain has revealed that she was both sexually and physically abused by her stepfather as a child, the abuse started when she was ten years old. She has stated that she did not want to report the abuse at the time as she was frightened it would break up the family, which included her two sisters and a half brother.

Jerry Twain, her stepfather, and her mother died in a car crash in 1987 bringing an end to the abuse. Fifty two year old Shania has said that she has chosen to speak out about it to give hope to other victims of abuse, to show them that it can be “survived’.

While being praised for her openness about the abuse, she is currently fielding some rather negative publicity after saying in an interview that she would have voted for Trump had she been a citizen of the USA. On Sunday she sent out a tweet which included the following, "I would like to apologise to anybody I have offended in a recent interview with the Guardian relating to the American President. The question caught me off guard. As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context.”
