WATCH: Viola Davis makes history as Oscar nominations are announced

Viola Davis in the role of Ma Rainey

The 55-year-old American actress and producer can now add to her growing list of accolades  - most overall acting nominations for a Black actress in Hollywood history.

Beyond a doubt one of the most gifted performers of her time, Davis received her fourth Oscar nomination Monday for her performance as Ma Rainey in the movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. She has previously been nominated for her work in Doubt, The Help, and Fences, for which she went on to win the Best Supporting Actress nod.

In the best actress category Davis is up against Andra Day in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman, Frances McDormand in Nomadland, and Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman.

Proficient in any performing genre, Davis moves effortlessly from theatre to making movies and television series – my money is on her walking away with the trophy on the big night.

If you missed  power couple Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas announcing all the nominees, you can relive the live stream right here :

The Academy Awards will be dished out on April 25 live from Beverly Hills.
