Watch: PE born Stuart Forrest makes Oscar shortlist  

The Snail and the Whale


The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 10-film shortlists for animated shorts and visual effects and CEO Stuart Forrest and his team at Triggerfish Animation have made it onto the list with their animated movie, The Snail and the Whale.

A total of ninety-six films qualified in the animated short category, members of the short films and feature animation branch then voted the list down to ten films, and will now select five nominees.

Nine of the ten films are from directors who have never been nominated for an animated short Academy Award with the exception being The Snail and the Whale. One of its directors, Max Lang, has previously been nominated twice, for The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom.

The complete shortlist is as follows.

  • Burrow — Madeline Sharafian (U.S.)
  • Genius Loci — Adrien Mérigeau (France)
  • If Anything Happens I Love You — Michael Govier, Will McCormack (U.S.)
  • Kapaemahu — Dean Hamer, Joe Wilson, Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu (U.S.)
  • Opera — Erick Oh (South Korea/U.S.)
  • Out — Steven Clay Hunter (U.S.)
  • The Snail and the Whale — Max Lang, Daniel Snaddon (U.K.)
  • To Gerard — Taylor Meacham (U.S.)
  • Traces — Hugo Frassetto, Sophie Tavert Macian (France/Belgium)
  • Yes People — Gísli Darri Halldórsson (Iceland)

Triggerfish is a computer amination studio based in Cape Town. From this studio has come the likes of Khumba and Adventures in Zambezia. In 2019, Netflix announced that Triggerfish would produce its first African animated TV series.
