Famous natural historian, 94-year-old Sir David Attenborough, has devoted his life to exploring the magnificence of the natural world, at the same time, as the years have passed, he has witnessed first-hand the unforgivable devastation wreaked upon Mother Nature by mankind.
A Life On Our Planet is his account of the damage we have done to this place we call home. Available to stream now on Netflix, critics are saying that it is a huge departure from the usual kind of fare Attenborough brings to the screen. This is what Attenborough himself is calling his “witness statement”, his bringing to the attention of the world the senseless decimation of the natural world at the hands of man.
The documentary opens in Chernobyl, the site of a nuclear accident that shocked the world in April 1986. According to National Geographic, the clean-up of the area surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is expected to continue for decades, while parts may remain uninhabitable for thousands of years.
It is from this point that Attenborough takes viewers on a brutally honest journey as he looks back over his lifetime on planet earth and bears witness to the damage we have caused.
Attenborough is the ‘grim reaper’ of the natural world, calling us to act now or face the certain death of planet earth.
