Billed as a coming-of-age drama about the only hearing member of a deaf family, the movie has won the Screen Actors Guild's top film award, putting it in the running for Oscar glory at next month’s ceremony.
The deaf cast made history at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica California last night 27 February, becoming the first non-hearing ensemble cast to win the accolade Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

The storyline is that of a small-town girl gifted with a voice that her parents can’t hear, seventeen-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones), is the sole hearing member of a deaf family—a CODA, Child of Deaf Adults - who pursues her dream of becoming a singer. Ruby's parents are played by Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur.

World Hearing Day takes place this week on the 3rd of March to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world.
