Netflix shared the news yesterday that they had put out a challenge to some of the top directors in the entertainment industry to make a short film during lockdown – the end result is a collection of short films created in quarantine by much-lauded filmmakers around the globe.
The project was the brainchild of Chilean director Pablo Larrain and consists of "personal, moving stories that capture our shared experience of life in quarantine".
Speaking to Radio Times Pablo Larrain described the project as a “wonderful chance to work with people I admire” and “a very extraordinary chance to keep working, thanks to Netflix and its amazing team, in days so confusing and unique.”
The director of original films at Netflix Teresa Moneo told the publication that "Seeing the stories of others can open hearts and minds and make us all feel more connected”.
“This is why, in these unprecedented times, we are humbled to work with this incredible ensemble of diverse filmmakers and to bring their personal stories to our members around the world”.
Hollywood A-listers such as Kristen Stewart and Maggie Gyllenhaal were among those who took part in the challenge, with Stewart shooting in Los Angeles while Gyllenhaal shot in Vermont.
The short movies will also provide some relief in the way of a donation by the streaming service to a hardship fund for cast and crew who have lost their jobs since the pandemic hit.
Homemade will be streamed by the network giant on Tuesday, June 30.
Netflix has described Homemade as "a collection of short films created by celebrated filmmakers around the world. Confined at home as a consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak, filmmakers created personal, moving stories that capture our shared experience of life in quarantine. This is a celebration of the craftsmanship of filmmaking and the enduring power of creativity in the face of a global pandemic. "
