WATCH: 'Amy Winehouse - 10 Years On'

Amy Winehouse

A new documentary about Amy Winehouse will be released in July by Britain’s BBC Two and BBC music. Amy Winehouse: Ten Years On,  is said to offer a look at details of the singer’s life through the eyes of her mother Janis Winehouse, a narrative that is said to differ from the one we have hitherto been told.

Of the documentary Janis said in a statement Wednesday, “I don't feel the world knew the true Amy, the one that I brought up, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy.”

27-year-old Amy died from alcohol poisoning at her London home in July 2011. She had struggled with drinking and drug addiction issues throughout her career.

The BBC has said that the documentary will feature previously unseen family archive footage.

As stated in Rolling Stone , “Janis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003 and was motivated to make the documentary before the disease “threatens to strip her of her memories of Amy,” according to the BBC. Janis previously reflected on Winehouse’s life in the 2014 book, Loving Amy: A Mother’s Story.

In 2015 Asif Kapadia, won an Oscar for the documentary Amy, the singer's father Mitch Winehouse called it misleading and said the family had disassociated itself from the film.
