A newly born giraffe with a birth defect causing one of her front legs to bend the wrong way has been given the chance to frolic around like the rest of her species through the intervention of orthotist Ara Mirzaan.
Msituni, who was born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, has been fitted with leg braces by Mirzaan, a specialist from the Hanger Clinic. The clinic is one of 875 locations providing orthotic and prosthetic solutions and technologies to humans. Mirzaan usually fits braces and splints on people, including Paralympians – this was the first time he has fitted braces on an animal - he said it was one of the most 'rewarding things I've ever done."
