WATCH : A decade in the making, Martin Scorsese's The Irishman has premiere date

Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" will have its world premiere as the opening night selection of the New York Film Festival on September 27.

Written by Steve Zaillian ("Schindler's List"), the film is based on Charles Brandt's nonfiction book "I Heard You Paint Houses" and stars Al Pacino as Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa, Joe Pesci as Pennsylvania mob boss Russell Bufalino and Robert De Niro as their right-hand man, Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran. The cast also includes Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin and Harvey Keitel.

The highly anticipated movie will be released in select theatres and on Netflix later this year. Incidentally, Netflix has backed Scorsese financially as well, this film is the most expensive of his career with a budget of around $105m (82m).

It’s a movie that has been dogged by various issues and while there is no official trailer just yet, this fascinating insert on why this movie has been a long time coming, is well worth watching.
