Twitter users can now mute online trolls and report hate speech, which has been rising post US elections.
The company has been criticised for its lack of action when it comes to hate speech and online abuse, but it says that because it happens in public and real time it has been difficult curbing such situations.
The site said they decided to take a step back and focus on the most critical needs and rapidly improve them.
They reported three areas that needed focus namely; controls, reporting and enforcement.
Del Harvey, Twitter’s vice president of trust and security, said there is a fine line between freedom of speech and abuse and this initiative is a step toward the path of getting rid of abuse.
Users will now be able to mute keywords, phrases and entire conversations they don’t want to see notifications about in addition to easily reporting abuse that will be handled by a specialized team.
