Tributes pour in for jazz great Steve Kekana

The late Steve Kekana


An outpouring of shock and grief has followed news of the death of legendary musician Steve Kekana who died Thursday of Covid-related complications.

Fans, fellow musicians, and celebrities took to social media to express their sadness at his death at 62 from the virus.

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa paid tribute on national television saying that the legendary and inspirational Kekana will be greatly missed. Mthethwa was working with Kekana on various projects at the time of his death in an attempt to bring some relief to the arts industry hard hit by the pandemic.

Amongst the celebrities to pay tribute was Robert Marawa who posted a clip of Kekana along with a caption that read,” What an incredible voice he had. Grew up loving this song and its theatrics plus the vocal delivery by both him and the late Nana Coyote Motijoane.... May the humble soul of Bra Steve Kekana rest in peace".

The much-lauded artist lost his sight at five years old and attended a school for the blind in Pietersburg, where he discovered a love of singing. He is also a Tshwane University of Technology alumnus with B Juris and LLB degrees. In 2020, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Philosophy by the University of South Africa.

The award-winning Kekana recorded more than 40 albums during his career making it big with hits in the 1908’s with his hit songs with the late Nana Coyote, Take Your Love and Keep It, together with the late Nana Coyote.
