A 13-year-old girl has been in the hospital for over two weeks after suffering third-degree burns while apparently attempting to imitate a video she saw on the popular social network.
Her family is now speaking out about the incident in the hope that they can prevent the same thing from happening to someone else.
The teenager, Destini Crane, of Portland, Oregon in the USA, severely burned her neck and right arm and has had to undergo three skin-grafting surgeries after trying, it is believed, to copy a video posted on the app.
The tragedy happened on May 13 in their home's bathroom. According to her sister, Andrea Crane, Destini is currently unable to speak to tell them what happened.
However, based on what they found in the bathroom, and after talking to her friends, they believe the youngster, who it is said "lived for TikToks," was trying to copy a video in which someone draws a shape on a mirror using a flammable liquid and then ignites it.
Found in the bathroom was a candle, lighter, and rubbing alcohol, which they believe exploded, setting her on fire, and , when Destini’s phone was retrieved, TikTok was still recording video.

According to the family, the road to recovery will be a long one. Kimberley Crane told ABC News that she is now intent on warning others to keep a close eye on what their children are doing on social media.
