Stricter film classifications for Britain

According to a recent report by  Sky News, film classifications in Britain are due for a change following research by the British Board of Film Classification. The research indicates that in just five years since the last survey, views of sex and violence have changed dramatically.

The study involved 10 000 teenagers and adults and results showed that they all had a general tolerance for violence but the youngsters, in particular, found scenes depicting discrimination, terrorism, self-harm and suicide disturbing.

It came as something of a surprise to discover that  95 % of the teenagers called for stronger classification. All age groups indicated that they would like to see stricter regulations around sex and sexual violence.

The new legislation would ban any depiction of rape for those under 15, as well as graphic sexual violence.  Rape and the "language of pornography" would be rated 18.

For example, according to Sky News, the movie, The Duchess,  would have to be reclassified as it features a sexual scene with overtones of rape.

The research also found that 97% of viewers would like similar guidelines for online content, such as Netflix and Amazon.
