South Africa’s national treasure receives Royal Shakespeare Company honour

Anthony Sher in a scene from 'Kunene and the King'

In a career that has brought him international recognition, both as a playwright and performer, Dr. John Kani has added yet another accolade to his impressive list of artistic achievements. He has been honoured by The Royal Shakespeare Company which, in celebration of its 60th Anniversary, has chosen Kunene and the King, by John Kani, as one of its 10 Best Plays ever produced by the RSC in its  60 years of existence.

Kani took to Twitter to express his delight saying, “I am overwhelmed by this honour.”

At 77 years of age, there is no stopping Kani despite the COVID-19 pandemic having closed the curtain on his play Kunene and the King on March 17 in London’s West End,  Kani continues to remain a sought-after actor in the industry. Most recently he was the voice behind the video produced for Earth Hour 2021 and flighted across the globe on Saturday, 27 March.

New Brighton-born Kani has had an incredible career in the arts over the years and we in Gqebera proudly claim him as our own - congratulations Dr. Kani – we hope it won’t be too long before Kunene and the King is performed at our Opera House in John Kani Rd!
