The mother of beleaguered Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales has locked herself in a church and is on a hunger strike in protest at her son's treatment following his forceable kiss on the lips of World Cup player Jenni Hermoso. The news was confirmed to the media by a relative of the family.
Rubiales has been embroiled in a bitter battle for his job as RFEF president since planting the kiss on Hermoso's lips following the team’s victory at the World Cup final in Sydney on August 20.
According to the Daily Mail, his distressed mother, Ángeles Béjar, has shut herself inside the church of the Divine Shepherdess in Rubiales' hometown of Motril, Andalusia, saying that her protest will continue until the "inhuman, bloodthirsty witch hunt which my son is being subjected to" comes to an end.
Hermoso, 33, has said that the kiss during the presentation ceremony was not consensual. Rubiales denies this and vehemently stated in an address to the media that he was not going to resign. He was however provisionally suspended by Fifa on Saturday.
Meanwhile, prosecutors at Spain's top criminal court began a preliminary investigation Monday into the 46-year-old Spanish football chief’s actions on grounds that it could be ruled a crime of “sexual assault.”
