The much loved and lauded South African poet, activist and journalist Sandile Dikani has died at the age of 53.
According to various reports, he passed away on Saturday evening from tuberculosis.
Born into an impoverished family in Victoria West in the Karoo, he went on to study law at the University of the Witwatersrand. His poetry writing started when he was detained by the apartheid government during the 1980s. Dikani ended up working as a journalist and political commentator, becoming arts editor for the Cape Times, editor of Die Suid Afrikaan and political editor of This Day.
Tributes have been pouring in for Dikani on social media. Former Caper Times editor , Ryland Fisher, was one of the first to express his condolences.
