Petition started to oppose proposed streaming licence fees

Netflix viewers would be forced to pay a license fee if the proposal is passed

The DA is calling on all citizens to reject the ANC's threat to extend the payment of TV licence fees to streaming services such as Netflix. Taking to social media they said. “We have already had to suffer the consequences for SABC failures. Make your voice heard now & sign this petition.”

In October the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies of South Africa, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, published a white paper which proposed a complete overhaul of the regulations that govern the country’s broadcasting industry. It proposed imposing licence requirements on Internet streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+.

A couple of weeks later the government suggested the enforcement of a 30% local content quota for these Internet streaming services in South Africa thereby promoting local content and languages.

According to MyBroadband government wants to “reposition the audio-visual media sectors for future growth and promote investments”.
