Last week the Sizwe Kupelo Foundation called for the immediate ban of Pit Bulls as domestic pets in South Africa following the tragic mauling to death of 10-year-old Storm Nuku by his family’s two pit bulls in Nelson Mandela Bay on 26 September. The foundation also established an online petition on change.org to ban the breed, it has amassed 32,690 00 signatures thus far and counting.
The National Society for the Protection of Animals has subsequently issued a formal media statement to address both the mass condemnation of the breed and the outrage of pitbull owners.
The Foundation said, “These attacks continue unabated, and we cannot continue losing young people like Storm Nuku and innocent civilians to these vicious dogs that have repeatedly shown that they should not be kept as pets.”
It is a must-read for any concerned citizen. As stated: “At first glance, the petition may appear to be outrageous, especially to Pitbull owners, however, upon careful reflection, the petition advocates for the protection of people and responsible pet ownership. The petition calls for all Pitbulls to be castrated/sterilized which would prevent the current rate of uncontrolled breeding. The petition also calls for stronger regulations for the keeping of Pitbulls (and other power-breed animals) requiring owners to have permits to keep such animals.”
