Netflix more expensive in South Africa than in the US: Here's why

Yes, added to everything else that is becoming more expensive by the day, comes the news that we pay roughly more than 17 % for our Netflix than our US  counterparts.

This was the result of a study done by research company Comparitech. So, while we only pay R99 a month for our Netlifx compared to R110.71 in the US, we lose out when compared to how many titles we can actually access.

If we get down to the nitty-gritty, the study said that US users have access to 5,839 titles on Netflix (4,123 movies and 1,716 TV shows) while South Africans have access to 4,291 titles, which consists of 2,792 movies and 1,499 TV shows.

If we convert this to percentages, we have 32 % fewer movies to choose from and 15% fewer TV shows to choose from.

Interestingly enough, in a homegrown study done this year by the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa, more South Africans apparently watch Showmax than Netflix, but by a very small margin. The study also revealed that YouTube is the top streaming video service by a huge margin and SABC 1, the most watched broadcast channel.
