Long time ambassador for the Nespresso brand, George Clooney, has expressed his dismay at alleged child labour on farms used by the coffee giant - Nespresso has always prided itself on using only ethically sourced beans.
In an article published by. The Guardian he said he is “surprised and saddened” by the discovery and went on to say in an official statement, ''clearly this board and this company still have work to do. And that work will be done.''
The discovery was made by investigative journalists working on a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary, due to air next week. They apparently have footage of children picking coffee beans and hauling large sacks on six Guatemalan farms believed to supply Nespresso.
The company has in response launched a “thorough investigation” into its farms in Guatemala where the abuse is said to have taken place. They have also put a stop to all purchases from these plantations.
However, the company did admit that its coffee suppliers are given a day or even two days advanced notice when spot checks take place.
