Miss South Africa top 12 finalist Levern 'Donatella' José has withdrawn from the 2023 edition of the Miss South Africa competition with immediate effect. José's withdrawal from the upcoming pageant comes after she was accused of being a bully on social media.

Shortly after being announced as a finalist just over a week ago it was alleged by former classmates that she had been a bully while in high school. The allegations came to light after the Top 12 finalists were revealed with many taking to Twitter to share their experiences.

One such Twitter user was @AnelisaJu who wrote: “I was shocked to learn you made it to the top 12 in Miss South competition, one of the girls you use to bully at school spoke out on what you and your gang of mean girls did to her on her WhatsApp status, you are truly a horrible person I’m not gonna lie.”

The event organizers refused to make a comment at the time but have issued a statement following José’s withdrawal which reads: "The Miss South Africa organization does not condone bullying of any kind. We accept Levern's decision to pull out of the competition and respect her for owning her truth and taking this time to focus on her own healing."

Jose has claimed in the statement that she herself has been the victim of bullying  - she said :   “"As a survivor of bullying, I learned how to protect myself from bullying during my school years. If my actions in protecting myself caused harm to anyone, I offer my sincere apologies. The pain of being a target has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I would never intentionally cause hurt or contribute to someone else's suffering."

“All forms of abuse and bullying are unacceptable and have no place in our society. Please know that I am determined to work against bullying and bring about wider awareness about this issue”.

“I am unwavering in my stance on upholding what is right and just. I am human; the pressure has been immense and has taken its toll on me. Together, let us strive for fairness and compassion in all our interactions with others.”

She went on to say that she is committed to becoming an anti-bullying advocate.

There was no word from the Miss SA camp as to who would be filling her place.
