Max Hurrell – ‘What the Minister said to me’

Max Hurrell’s hugely popular ZOL clip has made it to number 1 on the iTunes music chart! It's no wonder Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma got to hear it and asked the question on Twitter, “Who is this Max Hurrell fellow? We just need to talk.”

A nation waited – would they indeed sit down to have a serious chat about zol and the coronavirus – would she be angry – would she admit to having had a bit of a chuckle herself  - would she commend him for his creativity?

In case you missed it, a quick recap - it was a massive blow to smokers when Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma reneged on the promise to allow the sale of cigarettes during level 5 of lockdown. This was further exacerbated when level 4 came and the ban remained in place. The Minister took to national television to explain that the sharing of cigarettes does not comply with social distancing regulations saying, “When people zol, they put saliva on the paper, and then they share that zol.”

This is where the Cape Town muso stepped in, turning the clip into an EDM infused song called ‘ZOL’.  It was a huge hit with the public, going viral and even making it to TikTok as a dance challenge.

Right, let’s get to the crux of the story. According to thesouthaqfrican.com Hurrell in response to her questioning who he was on Twitter,  asked her to follow him so that he could provide her with his contact details. The article went on to say that Hurrell informed them that , “The minister did reach out to me after she followed me back. We had a brief chat about it and she was very nice. She found it funny and encouraged me to keep doing good with my craft”.  He responded by saying “I said thank you and that I’m glad the minister liked it”.

So in the words of the Bard, “All’s well that ends well.” Nice to know the minister has a sense of humour.

Max Hurrell – we look forward to your next creative gem so that we can have a laugh in these truly trying times!

The Cape Town-based muso has made the business of mixing politics and entertainment an art form, garnering a huge following for taking clips featuring politicians and government officials and turning them into hilarious skits and songs.
