As one of the stars of the hit NBC sitcom Friends, Matthew Langford Perry, seemed to have the world at his feet, his role as Chandler Bing on the series, which ran from 1994 to 2004, brought him instant fame and fortune.
But behind the scenes told a different story. In later years he was to tell the media, "I was on Friends from age 24 to 34. I was in the white-hot flame of fame. The six of us were just everywhere all the time. From an outsider's perspective, it would seem like I had it all. It was actually a very lonely time for me because I was suffering from alcoholism. It was going on before Friends, but it's a progressive disease. I wasn't a massive party guy. I wasn't a bull-in-a-china-shop kind of drinker."
He made his first trip to rehab in 1997, then again in 2001. That same year he was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, a condition caused by alcohol and prescription drug abuse.
Some 25 years later he is ready to share his journey to recovery with the world, unveiling the cover of his book on social media with a caption that reads: "So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time people heard from me. The highs were high, the lows were low. But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldn’t. And it’s all in here. I apologize it’s not a pop-up book."
