Local show runner, screenwriter, film producer, director and script editor Thandi Brewer, has died after losing her third battle against cancer.
Often dubbed the "Shonda Rhimes” of the SA movie industry, she had a prolific career spanning 60 years.
Thandi developed the screenplays for movies like Story of an African Farm, De Gerrie for Hugh Masekela and The Chemo Club. Some of the shows she created for the SABC or managed as a showrunner include 37 Honey Street, End Game, Keeping Score to Usindiso, Sticks and Stones and many more.
Her work as a script editor saw her working on shows from local television to scripts for international films and documentaries.
In March of this year the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) honoured her at the 13th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) with a special industry achievement award.
Thandi was a woman of incredible talent who believed in passing on her knowledge and experience to others, hence her being responsible for launching many careers in scriptwriting, directing and acting. She was also the founder and first chairperson of the highly respected Writer's Guild of South Africa (WGSA).
The Friends of Thandi Brewer Facebook group shared on Wednesday that she had passed on.
