There was a time in the past when the idea of an Afrikaans film with a gay character as the lead would have to have remained just that, an idea. Fast forward to 2018 and making its debut in selected theatres currently is a new film by Christiaan Olwagen. It’s called Kanarie (Canary) and it’s being billed as a coming- of- age musical war drama set in South Africa in 1985.
The basic storyline: a young boy named Johan Niemand, played by Schalk Bezuidenhout, gets called on by the military and auditions for the Canaries - the South African Defence Force’s church choir and concert group. Watch the trailer right here!
