Jesse Clegg pays homage to his father with Zulu ritual

This past weekend Jesse Clegg and his family celebrated Johnny Clegg's life at the KwaZulu-Natal homestead of his father's musical partner Sipho Mchunu.

Johnny’s first band Juluka began as a duo with Sipho Mchunu in 1969, it was the first group in the South African apartheid-era to have a white and black man performing alongside one another. They had been friends for over 50 years when Johnny passed away on July 16 last year from pancreatic cancer.

Sharing the news of the visit to Sipho’s home, Jesse wrote on Instagram, "My dad was deeply connected to this place, & to be able to commemorate & honour him here, surrounded by love & family, was very special. " He went on to say that they had performed an "important Zulu ritual for his spiritual crossing."
