And the Oscar goes to ....

Renee Zellweger has won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as famed American singer Judy Garland in the biographical film "Judy."

Zellweger said in reference to Garland that; "when we celebrate our heroes we are reminded of who we are - as one people united."

This is Zellweger's second Oscar and fourth nomination.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as a clown who descends into a spiral of violence and mental illness in "The Joker."

It is the actor's fourth Oscar nomination and first win.

The Oscar for Best Picture went to the South Korean thriller "Parasite," which became the first non English-language film to take Hollywood's top prize.

The film switches between comedy and horror as it tells the story of a poor South Korean family working for a wealthy family.

"Parasite" beat out eight other nominees.

The film, directed by Bong Joon Ho, also took home the awards for best director, best original screenplay, and best international feature.

Sam Mendes' World War I adventure "1917" collected a win for perhaps the least expected Oscar of its nominations: for visual effects.

To memorialize those who've left Hollywood behind, the Oscars turned to music's brightest new hope.

Billie Eilish - the 18-year-old pop star who just swept the Grammy Awards - sang the Beatles' "Yesterday" during the annual "In Memoriam" sequence honoring the movie industry's dearly departed.

Accompanied by her brother and collaborator Finneas O'Connell on piano, Eilish sang the classic Paul McCartney ballad with a tasteful restraint that contrasted with her long black fingernails and signature neon-green hair. - ANA/DPA
