Rania Youseff is to face trial in January 2019 for being accused of disrespecting Egyptian societal traditions and laws.
After making her appearance on the red carpet at the Cairo Internation Film festival wearing a black fitted dress that revealed her legs, two lawyers took it upon themselves to file a lawsuit against her for obscenity.
Lawyers Amro Abdelsalaam and Samir Sabri are known for taking celebrities to court.
Rania apologized on her Twitter account stating that. "I probably miscalculated when I chose to wear this dress. It was the first time that I wore it and I did not realise it would spark so much anger,” and "reaffirmed her "commitment to the values upon which" she was "raised in Egyptian society.”
If Rania is found guilty of the charges laid against her, she will face up to five years in prison.
She will also not be the first celebrity to be jailed under Egyptian law for dressing or behaving in a manner that opposes their traditions.
Singer Shaimer Ahmed was arrested and sentenced to two years in prison, which was reduced to one year after appealing the court's decision, for appearing in a music video in her underwear while suggestively eating a banana.
