Ed Sheeran sues musician after ?Shape of You? royalties ban

Next time you find yourself singing along to Ed Sheeran’s hit song Shape of you, bear this in mind, he is not making a dime from it. And this is all thanks to singer-songwriter Sam Chokri who earlier this year, won a ruling from the Performing Rights Society after claiming that Ed’s track plagiarized his song Oh Why.

This ruling means that since May of this year Ed has not made a cent from it whenever it is played. Now, we’re sure Ed will survive financially but aside from the money angle, there is a principle involved too and one for which Ed, it seems, is prepared to fight. He has hit back with legal action of his own and a writ has been filed at London’s High Court.

According to the paper Sam’s actions have affected Ed’s reputation and have also affected his revenue. In 2017 Shape of You was the best selling song of the year and it has a combined sales total of over 26 million copies. The ‘ditty’ also won Ed a Grammy for Best Solo Pop Performance. We'll keep you posted on the outcome!
