While the well-known SABC advertisement tells us “it’s the right thing to do “, there are still scores of South Africans who ignore the call to pay the annual licensing fee. That being said it may surprise you to know that the public enterprise made a whopping R815.1 million for the year 2022 from TV licenses.
However, this is a drop in the ocean when compared to the figure needed to keep the parastatal afloat.

Earlier this year the SABC had proposed clamping down on license evasion by introducing a public media levy, saying that it would be a compulsory new tax.
