Dlamini-Zuma – “Who is this Max Hurrell Fellow?”

Max Hurrell

Maz Hurrell’s ‘ZOL’ clip has been doing the rounds on social media and has now landed in the lap of  Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma herself. The Minister has subsequently taken to Twitter to ask the question, “Who is this Max Hurrell fellow? We just need to talk.”

In case you missed it, to recap - it was a massive blow to smokers last month when Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma reneged on the promise to allow the sale of cigarettes during level 5 of lockdown. This was further exacerbated when level 4 came and the ban remained in place. The Minister took to national television to explain that the sharing of cigarettes does not comply with social distancing regulations saying, “When people zol, they put saliva on the paper, and then they share that zol.”

This is where the Cape Town muso stepped in, turning the clip into an EDM infused song called ‘ZOL’.  It was a huge hit with the public, going viral and even making it to TikTok as a dance challenge.

Hurrell has thus far simply responded by saying, "It's going down."

The Cape Town-based muso has made the business of mixing politics and entertainment an art form, garnering a huge following for taking clips featuring politicians and government officials and turning them into hilarious skits and songs.

While respect for those in authority should always be an imperative, it is good to know that we are allowed to have a harmless laugh at their expense, especially during the situation in which we all now find ourselves.

If you missed it - take a look right here!

Will the Minister indeed sit down with Max to have a chat over a cup of tea? It remains to be seen - we’ll keep you posted.
