The iconic presenter who passed away on the 22nd August 2023 at 74, was posthumously recognized for his outstanding contribution to the broadcast industry over a career that spanned 36 years.
The 17th annual South African Film and Television Awards were held in person for the first time in three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic with the late legendary presenter Derek Watts being awarded a prestigious Lifetime Achiever Award.

In July, Watts announced his retirement from the long-running investigative show, Carte Blanche due to his deteriorating health. Diagnosed with skin cancer in 2022, the cancer then spread to his lungs. Watts was part of the Carte Blanche team for 36 years.
Veteran Afrikaans film director and cinematographer Koos Roets was also given a Lifetime Achiever Award for his decades-long contributions to the TV and film industry.
The SAFTAS were held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Friday and Saturday night.
