Charlize Theron ruffles feathers over comments about Afrikaans

The stunning Benoni-born superstar has ruffled plenty of feathers over her remarks about her mother tongue during an appearance on an episode of the SmartLess Podcast series.

Did Theron go one step too far even though it appears to have been in jest?

If you are late to the party, here’s what went down :

During her appearance on the SmartLess podcast, the 47-year-old actress and producer addressed the topic of her mother tongue saying jokingly said that ‘about 44 people still speak Afrikaans’, before calling it an ‘unhelpful language’ . She then added insult to injury by saying the language is “dying out”.

Although her remarks were made in jest, plenty of social media users have taken umbrage over the comments.

"SmartLess" with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, & Will Arnett is a podcast that connects and unites people from all walks of life to learn about shared experiences through thoughtful dialogue and organic hilarity. A nice surprise: in each episode of SmartLess, one of the hosts reveals his mystery guest to the other two. What ensues is a genuinely improvised and authentic conversation filled with laughter and newfound knowledge to feed the SmartLess mind.
