Ansel Elgort plays the lead in West Side Story Movie

Steven Spielberg adapts West Side Story for the big screen and casts Ansel Elgort as the lead.

Ansel Elgort will play Tony in the new adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story.

The new version was written by the Pulitzer Winner and Oscar Nominee Tony Kushner.

Tony received his Pulitzer award in 1993 for his play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.

Ansel who is better known for his roles in Baby Driver and The Fault in our Stars will play the character Tony who was originally played by Larry Kert in the 1957 Broadway musical, followed by Richard Beymer, who played Tony in the 1961 film adaptation.

A West Side Story was inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The storyline follows the rivalry between two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.

The 1961 film adaptation of the Broadway musical earned itself 11 Academy Award nominations of which it won 10.

The release date for the latest film is set for 2019.
