Acclaimed Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is breaking new boundaries with an innovative new fashion venture that is not only sustainable but also provides a platform for refugees and other marginalized groups to showcase their creativity.
Called Atelier Joilie, the UN envoy has posted a letter on her official website asking why we "covet designer labels" when we can all create ourselves.
She added: “We can all collect, appreciate, and be influenced by the designs of others. But the highest form of self-expression - and I believe the most fun - is to create for ourselves”.
“I am building a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers, and artisans from around the world. A place to have fun. To create your own designs with freedom. To discover yourself”.
The venture will use only leftover, quality vintage material and deadstock allowing one to repair or upcycle pieces from one’s own closet thereby “breathing new life into what could have been thrown away, and creating quality heirloom garments with personal meaning”.
