According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, there are currently 9.2 million account holders who have outstanding balances amounting to a staggering R44.2 billion owed to the parastatal.
Minister Mondli Gungubele was responding to a recent written parliamentary Q&A which brought to light the uphill battle the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) continues to wage against those who simply refuse to pay their TV licenses.
The state broadcaster is now working with the government on a new model to counter the culture of non-payment.
Gungubele said: “In terms of the South African Broadcasting Corporation SOC Ltd Bill 2022 that was approved by Cabinet on 29 November 2022 for the submission to Parliament for processing, the DCDT is proposing that the television license model be replaced with the household fee model.”
