Jacob Zuma's criminal case was predictably postponed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday as the former President is currently being treated outside of the Escourt prison for a medical condition.
The 79-year-old former President is currently serving a 15-month prison sentence for Contempt of Court but was hospitalized recently on unspecified medical grounds.
Honourable Judge Piet Koen ruled that the matter be postponed to the 9th and 10th of September, having considered the submissions of counsel for both the State and the accused.
He further ordered that a medical report in respect of Zuma’s health be delivered by no later than the 20th of August.
It was further directed that the State may appoint its own medical practitioner to examine the former President and to give evidence if required, as to his fitness to attend court and stand trial.
Zuma and the French arms company, Thales, have been charged with numerous counts related to the controversial multi-billion rand arms deal of the 1990s.
