Former President Jacob Zuma will be eligible for parole after serving a quarter of his 15-month jail sentence.
Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Ronald Lamola, was speaking outside the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday to address the media on Zuma's incarceration.
He says Zuma is currently at the Medium B facility with a bed capacity of 512 inmates including a hospital section.
He said as a precaution and in line with the Covid-19 measures in place, Zuma will be placed in isolation for 14 days and will further be assessed by the centre’s medical team to determine the conditions of his incarceration.
“This assessment is done, to determine the major risks and needs of the offender,” Lamola said.
Minister Lamola also highlighted that the former president will not be getting any preferential treatment.
Zuma handed himself over to the facility just minutes before the midnight deadline on Wednesday evening.
The Constitutional Court found him guilty of Contempt of Court and handed down the 15-month sentence last week.
Zuma has brought a recission application to the Constitutional Court, which will be heard on the 12th of July.
