Jacob Zuma hands himself over to start contempt of court sentence

Jacob Zuma Foundation

Former President Jacob Zuma has complied with the incarceration order of the Constitutional Court, following a drama-filled evening on Wednesday.

In a late-night Tweet, Police Ministry spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, said the Ministry can “confirm that former President of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma was placed in custody” in compliance with the Constitutional Court judgment.

The Jacob Zuma Foundation also issued a statement on Twitter that “President Zuma has decided to comply with the incarceration order,” adding that he would present himself to a Correctional Services facility in Kwazulu Natal.

Earlier, a crowd of supporters and media gathered at the gate of Zuma's Nkandla home, where shortly after 11 pm a convoy of cars was seen leaving at high speed.

Zuma’s incarceration follows a Constitutional Court judgment finding him in contempt of an order to appear before the State Capture Commission and sentencing him to 15 months in jail.

In a hard-hitting reaction, the DA posted a Tweet of an image of the 79-year-old former President in prison garb, with the caption asking, “if this could be a new fashion trend for corrupt ANC officials?”

The former President’s daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla Tweeted that “we celebrate the imprisonment of the Freedom Fighter comrades, we celebrate the incarceration of the only man who remains loyal to the ANC.  Comrades, no retreat, no surrender in fighting WMC (White Monopoly Capital) and their proxy’s (sic) in our Leadership.”
