Young girl drowns near Potchefstroom

 An eight-year-old girl drowned in a dam 25km outside Potchefstroom while swimming with friends, paramedics said on Tuesday.

On Monday afternoon the child got into difficulties and her friends ran to summon help, said ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks.

The child's family took her out of the water and tried to resuscitate her.

Paramedics continued medical treatment, but she was later declared dead on the scene. (Sapa)
