South Africa and the world is mourning the death of South African virologist Professor Gita Ramjee who died on Tuesday due to complications related to COVID 19.
Ramjee, who died in a hospital in Umhlanga, KZN, was a world-renowned HIV prevention and treatment scientist where she headed up portfolios at the Aurum Institute and SA Medical Research Council.
She started getting sick shortly after returning from a trip to the United Kingdom.
The Institute said they were deeply saddened by the death of Ramjee who worked tirelessly to find HIV prevention solutions for women.
A Spokesperson Kanya Ndaki said Ramjee was acknowledged internationally for her expertise in the field of microbicide research, including a Lifetime Achievement Award for HIV Prevention.
According to the Department of Health, five people have died from Covid-19 in the country.
Health Minister Dr Zwelhi Mkhize says two of the five patients died in KZN, a 74-year-old man in Ladysmith and a 46-year-old woman with chronic asthma and hypertension.
