Police in North West have arrested four suspects who recorded themselves drinking and taunting Police Minister Bheki Cele.
The video was recorded in Stinkwater on the 22nd of March at 10 pm.
South Africa was not yet on a national lockdown but the sale of alcohol after 6 pm had already been banned.
Police say the suspects were arrested in an intelligence-led operation and the phone used to record the video was confiscated.
In the video, a woman blamed Minister Cele for not having a boyfriend whilst another said he caused her stress. A reference, in Sesotho, was also made about Cele’s genitalia.
Police said in a brief statement that they will continue to follow up on all videos circulating on social media in which the contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations is being encouraged.
The four suspects will be charged for the alleged transgression of Section 11 (5)(c) of the Disaster Management Act of 57 of 2020 and crimen injuria.
