Women's group condemn decision to free Pistorius

A women's group feels that Oscar Pistorius' release under correctional supervision is likely to send the wrong message to other offenders.

The former Paralympian is to be released on Tuesday, as confirmed by the Department of Correctional Services.

Pistorius was sentenced last year to five years behind bars for culpable homicide after shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

He will now spend the rest of his sentence under house arrest.

Spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Network on Violence Against Women, Cookie Edward says this is likely to make other similar offenders believe they can escape serving harsh and lengthy sentences.

" This is not setting an example and we don't think that the legal system has really ,even proper thought to have him released so early, because it's not an example to other men.Other men feel they will be able to do that and will be able to walk out of prison tomorrow and serve the rest of the sentence through community service, it's not a good example at all" she said.
