A 25-year-old woman has died, after she and her daughter were trapped in a burning house allegedly set alight by her boyfriend in Kwaggafontein, in Mpumalanga.

Police say Nkosiphile Nkambule died two days after the incident last Tuesday, after managing to shield her six-year-old daughter from sustaining fatal burn wounds in the fire.

The boyfriend, who’d also sustained burn wounds in the incident, was arrested a short while later while trying to flee the area.

He appeared in court last Friday, where his case was postponed until a later date for a formal bail hearing.

A police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlthati says it is believed an argument broke out between the deceased and her boyfriend, Morgan Mashiyane, who is also the father of the child, which lead to the gruesome ending.

Hlathi says initial reports suggest that he wanted to perish with the victim but when he saw the fire he became scared and started banging on the windows begging for help.
