Woman killed in Algoa Bus smash in PE

A female passenger in her 50's was killed on Friday afternoon and three other people were seriously injured when an Algoa Bus ploughed into the Standard Bank building on the corner of Commercial Road and Kempston road in Sydneham, Port Elizabeth.

40 other passengers on the bus sustained lesser injuries and were taken to various hospitals in the area.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans says the 25 year-old bus driver was not injured.

He told police he was unable to turn the bus as he approached Commercial Road.

Labans says the driver tested negative for alcohol.

However, a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving has been opened.

It was earlier reported that an Ambulance racing to the crash scene was involved in an accident on the corner of Burt Drive and 7th Avenue in Newton Park.

Another car is believed to have been involved and fortunately, no-one was injured.
