Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt for the gunmen who shot and killed the wife of late Chief Clyde Mnisi, who died in a hail of bullets last week.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said 30-year-old Charlene Matthews was gunned down in the early hours of Tuesday morning at her residence, while two male family members were wounded.

He said the motive for the shooting is not yet known and a team has been assembled to investigate the matter.

Matthews' murder comes a week after 37-year-old Chief Clyde Mnisi was killed on the Airport Road near White River next to Kruger-Mpumalanga International Airport.

"Her husband, Chief Clyde Mnisi (37) was fatally shot on the Airport Road near White River next to Kruger-Mpumalanga International (KMI) Airport in the evening of Sunday, 26 March 2023 around 23:00. His killers are still at large and have not yet been found," Mohlala said.

No arrests have yet been made in both murders.

The Citizen reported that Mnisi was previously arrested for a range of crimes that included the illegal buying and selling of rhino horns, corruption, money laundering, and racketeering.

He was reportedly due to appear in court on 17 April 2023 on rhino poaching charges.
