Durban wife to appear in court for faking her kidnapping

Pixaby

A seemingly desperate Durban wife has been arrested after she allegedly faked her own kidnapping and demanded a ransom from her businessman husband.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the 47-year-old woman has been charged with perjury for her apparent attempt to make a quick buck.

Relaying the incident Netshiunda said they received a complaint about a woman who was allegedly kidnapped on Clay Field Drive in Phoenix on Monday afternoon.

He said it was reported that she had left the business premises to use a restroom at her home which was nearby.

“A few moments later her husband received a phone call from her, reporting that she was kidnapped and pleaded with him to deposit an undisclosed amount of money for her release.”

He said another call was made to the husband by a man who threatened to hurt the woman if the money was not paid.

“Shrewd police investigations revealed that the woman had faked her own kidnapping and was duly charged with perjury,” Netshiunda said.

He said police want to send a strong message about making false kidnapping claims that they would face the full might of the law.

“Kidnapping is not a matter to joke about and police have been working hard and stretching resources in a quest to prevent kidnapping which had seen a slight increase of late,” Netshiunda said.

The woman is expected to appear before the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
