The Provincial Serious Violent Crimes Unit in the Western Cape is investigating the shooting of five people in Gugulethu on Saturday night.
Among those killed was the off-duty protector of Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale.
National Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe identified the deceased officer as Warrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa, who served as Deputy Minister since 2019.
She said SAPS mobilised maximum resources to trace and apprehend those behind the attack and killing of the four men and a woman.
According to a SAPS statement, the shooting occurred in NY 5 at around 11 p.m.
The victims were sitting in two cars on the side of a road in the area when the gunmen arrived in a vehicle.
“The suspects approached the two vehicles and started firing numerous shots at the two parked vehicles,” the statement said.
They fled in the same vehicle that dropped them off and remain at large.
